FEMA Clarifies Levee Policy
August 6, 2009
On August 6, 2009, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) amended its February 2009 policy on "Rehabilitation Assistance for Levees and Other Flood Control Works." This clarification allows FEMA to provide financial assistance to state and local governments for eligible work associated with debris removal and flood fighting activities. This action is retroactive to February 25, 2009, when the revised policy went into effect.

Regional Interagency Levee Task Force for the Midwest Floods of June 2008

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Natural Resources Conservation Service and other federal and state agencies will conduct their final meeting of the regional Interagency Levee Task Force (ILTF) July 14th, at the Hilton St. Louis Airport. Interested media are invited to meet with task force officials between 11:30 and 11:45 a.m. to discuss next steps for a more permanent regional levee task force. The purpose of future regional task forces will be to look at non-structural alternatives for flood risk reduction and to improve communication and collaboration between federal, state, local and non-governmental flood response organizations. The purpose of the ILTF was to establish a collaborative regional interagency approach to long-term restoration of floodplain management systems damaged by the Midwest Floods of June 2008. Flood risk management is a shared responsibility and partnership among federal, state and local government agencies, local authorities and private landowners.

This working meeting will discuss the current operational activities of the Interagency Levee Working Groups located at the five Joint Field Offices located within the impacted states of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Missouri and Wisconsin following the Midwest floods of June 2008. The meeting offers the opportunity for an open dialogue with the state and participating agencies and to share concerns and issues relative to flood risk management.
